BBC Television Centre – 3D model

The BBC said farewell to its famous Television Centre studios in West London recently after selling the site for redevelopment, however the buildings unique question mark shape lovingly dubbed the doughnut by BBC staff will remain. Tasked with capturing the building and its surrounds our team set about capturing this iconic site using high resolution aerial imagery and the latest photogrammetric capture techniques. We modelled the site and its context over a period of 6 days, using the photogrammetric model as a base we then upgraded the main building to include facade details such as windows and doors, separated into useable layers. All England Lawn Tennis Club – 3D Model

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquest Club (AELTC) is better know as the Wimbledon Championships and is the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on Grass. Our model of the clubs grounds and surrounds was created using high resolution aerial imagery and the latest photogrammetric capture techniques. Using this base model we upgraded Centre Court and Number One court to include additional facade information giving the model a very realistic look and feel. 3D model of Buckingham Palace

Lately we have been working on some pretty exciting projects, one of which required us to model the façade of Buckingham Palace. We began the process by combining our Photogrammetric model of the Palace and its surrounds with a very high resolution 3D laser scan of the front façade and gates. The two data sets matched up nicely and we were able to create a highly detailed and accurate model of the Palace. The renders you see here were created using Cinema 4D, its still a work in progress but something we wanted to share.

3D model of Gatwick Airport

A while ago we were asked to model Gatwick Airport, only now have I been able to find the time to post a few renders of the model. This was an unusual request to get but one we relished modelling, and it proves that if we can source aerial imagery of your site, we can create a great looking model for you.

The Leadenhall Building – Before & After

Earlier in the year Vertex Modelling supplied the Architectural visualisation studio Preconstruct with a small area of our City of London model. Using this blank canvas they have created an absolutely stunning render of what will soon be a new addition to the London skyline – The Leadenhall Building. We couldn’t quite believe our eyes when we saw it, but were assured that this is a render of a 3D model, amazing stuff. Please have a look below at the Before and After renders.

3D Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is the first area in London to get the level 4 detail treatment and although we are slightly bias, we think it looks great!
All buildings facing onto Piccadilly Circus and the lower half of Regent Street have now been modelled to increadible detail. Using a 3D laser scanner we were able to merge our photogrammetric model with the laser scans of the facades to create one of the most detailed and comprehensive models of this famous London site.

London 2012 Olympic Venues

Here at Vertex Modelling we like to keep our 3D model of London as up to date as possible. So once the latest 2010 imagery of London was made availble we jumped on the chance to capture the Olympic Park in Stratford and some of the 2012 London Olympic venues. We currently have models of the main Olympic stadium, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome complete and are busily creating the others, including the Beach Vollyball arena within its setting at Horse Guards Parade and the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon. 3D Model of the Houses of Parliament, Westminster, London

Vertex modelling has remotely captured one of the most accurate 3D models of London’s Houses of Parliament. Situated on the north bank of the river Thames the Houses of Parliament are one of London’s most iconic buildings. This complex and detailed model was captured using ultra high resolution imagery supplied by Blom Aerofilms, which allowed us to model features such as parapet walls and individual spires. We were even able to spot a few areas that looked like they were in need of repair!

Of course, being a Vertex model it is supplied as an AutoCAD solid, which allowed us to demonstrate how easy it is to add façade detail. If you take a closer look at the clock tower of Big Ben you can see how we have been able to upgrade this section of the building to a more architecturally accurate representation.

Smaller is Better – 3D Model of London from 4cm GSD Photography

Ground Sample Distance (GSD) is a technical term used in Photogrammetry that describes the area represented by each pixel in a digital aerial photograph. Best commercial satellites (like Google’s $502 million GeoEye-1, flying at 423-mile-high orbit) can take images with resolution of up to 41cm/pixel – that means each pixel in the satellites imagery represents a ground area of 41cm square.

Google Maps use satellite imagery with a GSD between 200–41 cm/pixel for zoomed out views and aerial photographs with a GSD of 15-25 cm/pixel for zoomed in views. Aerial imagery with a resolution of 12.5–25 cm/pixel GSD is the industry standard, used by Google Maps, Ordnance Survey, US Geographical Survey and many others.

At Vertex Modelling, we use Blom Aerofilms digital imagery with GSD of 4 cm/pixel for most of our projects with some parts of London covered by 2.5 cm/pixel GSD imagery. This gives us the ability to view and capture more information from the imagery at greater levels of accuracy than our competitors. Below are two images which highlight the difference in quality between imagery captured at 12.5cm/pixel GSD and imagery captured at 4cm/pixel GSD.

And on this second set you can see the massive difference when fully zoomed-in from both Google Maps and Vertex Modelling imagery.

Having access to this high quality imagery allows us to capture features to strict accuracy guidelines, spot heights in our London 3D model have been within 40 mm accuracy compared to full measured surveys. This makes models supplied by Vertex Modelling useful way beyond use as just a context model.

Edinburgh Castle in Wikipedia:

Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
